Recently I was asked about where the UCC came from and so I thought I would resurrect the following:
Every once in a while it is important for us to remember where we came from because it helps us to define who we are and what we believe. Since Independence Day is just around the corner, I wanted to share some historical facts about the ancestry of the UCC and the founding of the United States of America. June 25-27, 1957 at the Cleveland Music Hall in Cleveland, OH – representatives from the Congregational Christian Church and the Evangelical Reformed Church merged to create the United Church of Christ. BUT! did you know that during the American Revolution –
Members of the Congregational Church were very active as leaders in resisting the Stamp Act; and members who signed the Declaration of Independence were Sam Adams, John Hancock, John Adams and Robert Treat Paine. (Hancock was the grandson of a minister; Paine was the son of a minister and John Adams was the son-in-law of a minister.)
Clergy of the Reformed Church preached to the troops. George Washington (an Episcopalian) attended the Reformed Church in Germantown, PA. The Liberty Bell was hidden in the cellar of Zion Reformed Church in Allentown, PA
